Packing kitchen items can be difficult. Here are some tips and hints on packing your kitchen!

Did you know that in most cases, packing the kitchen is typically the most difficult room in the house to pack? Most people don’t realize that they have so many dishes and kitchen appliances that are odd shaped, bulky and hard to figure out what to do with.

Do you want to know how to manage packing your kitchen? We can help!

There are a lot of packing solutions that we can provide as well as tips for certain items, so I went ahead and picked some items in a random search to talk about today. 

Hopefully this will help you with some of your packing questions, but if you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Let’s start with some odd shaped items. Like this handy dandy Kitchen Aid Mixer! 

Man this thing is a monster and made Mom’s day when she opened it at Christmas! It does everything and the cookies that this sucker produces are out of control delicious!!! 

Now, packing and moving it without the original box!! What a headache right??!!???

Nah, we have this under control. We recommend that you use a 3.0 carton and pack this monster upright with non inked professional packing paper securely in the bowl. Be sure that you use a lot of paper on the inside because the tighter you pack it the less likely there will be damage to it during the move.

What about these knives!???!!? 

Everyone has them in their kitchen. They are a required tool and necessary. Now what do you do about these sharp utensils?

Well, it seems easy enough to just toss them into a random box right? Wrong! 

These sharp items can puncture a carton and stab a mover or your best friend… whoever is carrying the box at the time when the knife suddenly plunges through it! 

Let’s think a little safer with these guys and put them into a plastic tote along with scissors or any other potentially deadly objects that you might have lying around.

Now… not all of us drink coffee, but the 99 percent of the rest of us that do, have one of these!

Or even better yet, who has one of these bad boys!!???! (Wish I did) and how the heck do you pack that?

Well, the first order of business is to make sure there isn’t any water or coffee in them and you would be surprised how many people don’t check that before packing their coffee machines. 

The coffee and water can get stuck in parts and pieces of the machines and completely destroy them during a move. So once you have that accomplished, then you will want to be sure that you use a lot of packing paper (we recommend professional packing paper because newsprint can leave ink spots on your items especially if they are going into long term storage or something like that)

Wrap the glass completely separate from the machine and fill it with as much paper as possible. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is that they don’t use enough paper on the inside or the outside of the glass. 

We also advise that you pack these types of items into a double cardboard carton such as a dish pack and that you keep all glass pieces at the top of that box. 

Here is an example of a dish pack. 

These cartons are a lot thinker than normal cartons and they stand roughly 4 feet high. Pack the entire carton as tight as possible to avoid damages. 

Also, it never hurts to put a giant red arrow on the box to tell everyone what side up it should be at all times. Pots and pans that are less likely to get broken should be placed into the dish pack first.

Now which one of you has one of these?

Don’t worry; I won’t invade your house on Thanksgiving!

Well, maybe I will… Anyway, great for Turkey, right? And if you don’t have one, then you should definitely get one because these bad boys make the best bird! Okay, now I’m getting hungry and off topic.

As great as it is to have one of these, how do you pack it before moving? Well it’s actually a lot easier than you may think! Make sure it’s completely cleaned out because grease is not something that you want to deal with when it comes time to unpack!

Disconnect the propane tank and set that in a place where you can move it yourself (your moving company will not move flammable items like propane, so plan to haul all of the explosives yourself) preferably in a non-smoking vehicle J

Disconnect the entire thing and disassemble it as much as possible and keep a plastic bag handy for loose bolts and screws. Tape the bag of loose bolts and screws to the inside of the cooker as well as the propane tubing, and then stuff it with packing paper. Tape the lid closed when complete. This prevents the accessories from getting lost and keeps them with the fryer. We recommend using professional packing tape so it won’t leave a sticky residue on the item. An alternative to tape would be to use shrink wrap or even regular handy wrap to seal it with.

Depending on the size of the fryer, we recommend using anywhere between a 3.5 to a 4.5 carton to pack this item in. Of course, you would use a lot of non-printed professional packing paper. 

Once you place the fryer into the carton, use a blanket to wrap around it. This allows you to fill up the box, keep it light to carry, protect the item and hey, you even packed a blanket in the process of it all!

If you have a breadbox, like this:

Don’t leave it empty!!! Carefully wrap your deadly weapons such as steak knives, pokers, ice chipping tools, silverware and any other inanimate sharp objects from your kitchen into a towel and put tem into the breadbox! YAY! Everyone is safe and you packed some towels too!

Oh, I’m not done! Did you know that crock-pots have more use than a fine roast that cooked itself all day??? 

Why yes they do! Take all of the smaller glass items like shot glasses, glass measuring cups, and any little glass kitchen trinkets that you have and wrap each individually with professional non-inked packing paper and pack them into the crock-pot! 

Pack them as tight as possible and wrap the whole thing with shrink wrap or Saran wrap. Who would have thought that this stuff would come so handy for your move?

Now, I am not a professional cookie maker or anything, but I still have tons of these baking sheets in my kitchen. 

These are flat and easy to pack so why am I bringing them up? Because there is another use for them that’s why! 

You can use these on the inside lining of the boxes for extra protection to your dishes! Wrap them and use them on the outer edges to keep everything else a little safer.

Do you have a miniature fridge? Save some space and a box! Thaw the fridge out completely a couple of nights before your move and clean it out. Then, remove the shelving to make space inside the fridge. Wrap the shelving pieces using extra linens and towels and fill it up with as many types of linen that you can.

Pillow cases, sheets, etc… use lighter items and not heavy items. Once full, shrink wrap or tape closed with professional packing tape. You just saved a box and packed some more stuff. Easy as pie!

Moving isn't easy for pets. If you are moving your pets, here are some helpful tips and hints

We all love our pets and when you aren't moving, they are great to have around! So what do you do when you have to move with pets? There are many things that you can do that will not only help you out where moving pets are concerned, but it’s also a good time to update some things regarding your pets as well.

Here is a list of some things that you should try before moving with your pets.

Call the veterinarian and ask for the pets medical records and shot records. You never know when you are going to need them for your next visit to the new veterinarian at your new location.

Get a sitter! Moving day is just as stressful on your pets as it is on you. They can get in the way of the movers or run out of doors that are left open. The pet may not understand what’s going on and this can cause stress to the animal. It’s just better to get a sitter for your moving day to help you and the pets out.

Don’t forget to get your pets tag updated with your new address information. This is really inexpensive to do and pets can get confused or lost in a new place. Be sure to ensure that they can be returned to you if they get out.

If you are traveling with your pet in a car, lay blankets down, stop often for water and be sure that your pets have ventilation especially if it’s hot outside.

Make sure that you have prepared and inspected your new home prior to bringing your pets there. Check the fences, cubby holes and spaces where they can potentially get out of the house.

If your pet is on medication, be sure that you have plenty on hand and that you don’t pack it into a box where it could potentially be difficult to find.

Don’t leave your pet in the car for too long. When you are making a long road trip to your new location, it’s easy to stop for breaks. However, laws in each state are different when it comes to leaving pets in the car. Be sure to look up the local laws on leaving pets in the car in each state that you will be traveling through.

If your pet has really long hair, brush the pet prior to traveling to avoid getting hair all over the inside of the vehicle. This can make for an uncomfortable trip in some cases.

Don’t forget the leash! Even though some pets aren't going anywhere, the last thing that you want is to get a citation for breaking a leash law. Better to be safe than sorry.

Be sure that you make a first aid kit for the car. This is good for both humans and pets in case something happens along the way.

Always have cash on hand before traveling. You never know if you are going to need cash and if an ATM will be available. This also helps for last minute purchases in case your forgot anything.

Hints and Tips For a Successful Move - We Strive To Make Your Move As Easy As Possible - The Way The World Is Moving

Moving a large home can be very stressful. There is a lot to do when packing, planning and going through all of your items to downsize. Here are some tips and hints that can help to make this process a lot smoother for your relocation.

Take a deep breath, it’s moving and you will get through it!

One room at a time – Start with the rooms that get the less use so that you don’t pack something you may actually need.

One box at a time! Give yourself plenty of time to organize. Now is the perfect time to start going through stuff and downsizing.

Start washing things! Curtains, rugs, table cloths, etc… You want everything to be clean when you move into your new home and you want to allow the washing machine to fully drain so it’s not heavy and full of water on your moving day.

Eat your perishable food! Don’t go shopping unless you need to because you can waste a ton of money on food that you can’t put into the moving van.

Clear out crawl spaces and don’t forget your attic!!! It’s pretty easy to forget that you have items in these places.

You can use your extra blankets and sheets to provide padding for fragile items.

Make a “Parts Box” for all of your cords, screws, nuts and bolts and remotes!! (you definitely do not want to lose these items during your move)

Write on the sides of cartons and not on the top so items can be easily located if you have cartons stacked.

Take all valuable and sentimental items and pack them separately and clearly mark these items so that you can move these items yourself. Make a checklist of these items so that you don’t forget anything that me be important or of extraordinary value.

Don’t remove your clothing from the hangers!!! Gather the hangers together and slip a trash bag over the clothing and tie it at the top. Then you can hang them into your new closet at destination, remove the bag and Whala! Easy as 1, 2, 3.

Mark all of your electronic cords before disconnecting to make it easier to reconnect everything when you move in.

Use red duct tape on cartons that you want to immediately open for items you will need right away. You would be amazed at how helpful this is!

Before moving out, place a coffee filter with some coffee into it in the fridge so that it will keep the fridge smelling clean for the new tenant.

Don’t forget to double check every room and cupboard one last time before you close the moving trucks. Make sure that you have all your garden ornaments and tools.

Drain your lawnmower of gas and oil prior to moving.

Clean your grill (especially if you are going into storage)

Pack books in smaller boxes and lighter things into larger boxes. This helps to make the moving process faster so that cartons aren’t too heavy.

Make sure to stop by the post office or print off the change of address form. We have a list of places to help you remember all the important people to contact to change your address with them. Check out our moving resources!

Make sure that if you are going into storage that you do not pack batteries, candles or anything else that can possibly melt or damage your items. Cleaning supplies and bleach could destroy items. Please don’t move these items in the moving truck.

Garage Sale! Let’s talk about saving some of your hard earned cash on your move!

Here are some helpful tips on lighten the load! Most moving companies charge an hourly rate for your local move and if you are moving across state lines, then your move is estimated based on the weight of your household items. Having a garage sale can not only clean out your closet, but it can also save you tons of money when it comes to moving your house!

Here are some helpful tips on how to get the most for your items. A successful garage sale is the key!

PRICING YOUR ITEMS

·         Keep prices in multiples of five, such as 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and $1.00 – This makes it a lot easier to calculate the change that you need to give back to people and keeps a lot of the mind work out of it.

·         Set your prices with leeway for bargaining and make exceptions for collectable items that you feel deserve a higher price range.

·         If you have items that are defective or broken, mark them “AS IS” and reduce the price for those types of items. If you do sale the items, make sure your customers know what is wrong with them first to avoid a potential returning angry customer.

·         Always put price tags on every item. This avoids constant questions on how much things cost and streamlines your communication with your customers.

Advertising!

Your garage sale will be profitable if you operate like a successful business. Doing some basic advertising will not only draw your customer in, but it will also make your garage sale a bigger success.

·         Run an ad in your local neighborhood newspaper

·         Announce the sale to friends and local clubs and hang flyers

·         Advise your local church, newsletter and school newspapers

·         Hang large colorful signs with clear arrows for people to follow to your garage sale

One of the best techniques used is bold black lettering on white paper that jumps out to the eye. Be sure not to forget to list the dates and times on your flyers so people know when and where the garage sale is.

Days before the sale, put signs in windows or on bulletin boards of local stores. The day before, put signs in the area around the location of the sale. Have a big sign at the garage sale location.

SETUP!!!!

·         Remove all items that you are not trying to sale from the area

·         Organize clothing by size and set up a hanging rack or clothesline.

·         If possible, try to provide an electrical outlet for testing appliances and electrical items

·         Keep a tape measure handy so that shoppers can use it to measure items

·         Set up a table for the children (if you have any) to sell their own personal items. This will teach them about making money and business and it makes the garage sale even more exciting for them!

·         If you have a lot of clothing to sell, think about having a large mirror

Sales Staff

It’s very hard to manage a garage sale by yourself. Try asking some friends and family to help out. Have a car available for errands so that you can treat your helpers with some lunch and drinks.

Security

·         Keep your items safe buy having as many eyes as possible watching over them.

·         Wear a money belt or use a lock box for your money with limited access to it.

·         Allow customers in the sales area only. This prevents burglars from scoping out your possessions to steal at a later date.

·         Keep an eye out for people who loiter or watch you constantly

·         Put expensive items in a place where you can monitor them closely or assign a friend or family member the duty of watching those items only.

·         Keep your house locked up during the sale.

Final Details

Have everything you need the day before the garage sale! Here is a checklist to help!

·         Have lots of change and dollar bills so that you can properly give people change back. Rolls of coins are quite useful and you will be glad you have them.

·         Makes sure you have the lock box or money belt. If you don’t have one, then use an old tackle box that has divided sections for change.

·         Paper and pencils for computing costs or a calculator would work even better.

·         Don’t forget to have a trash can.

·         Have a large CASH ONLY sign made so that your customers pay with cash

·         Keep your pets confined during the sale. Even if you have very properly mannered pets, some of your customer may be allergic or frightened of them.

Wrapping it up

·         If the sale was a cooperative effort, divide up the profits and split it between all of the parties who helped make the garage sale a success.

·         Remove all of the garage sale signs that you put up

·         Consider donating the left over items to a charity

Answers to Questions about Moving

Buehler Companies knows that there are a lot of questions when it comes to your move. This is why we have compiled a list of the most common questions we get asked when people are moving. We hope this helps to answer some questions for you!

When is the best time to move?

If you have the option to select your moving time frame, it’s the best choice to select a time other than summer, end of the month or the end of the year holidays. The heaviest demands are placed on moving companies during these time frames. Moving companies will better be able to meet your needs in the winter, middle month and non holiday periods.

How long does it take to move?

This depends on many things. Everything plays a factor in the time it takes to move each household individually. The time of the year, weather conditions, the amount of items that you are moving, the time it takes to load the items onto a truck, if stairs are involved and how many flights and the distance in which you are going can all play a critical factor in the time it requires to complete your move.

When should I call a moving company?

The earlier that you can call your moving company the better. This helps the moving company to find the right driver with the right amount of space available on the truck going the way that you are moving. It helps the mover to plan accordingly to meet your scheduling needs and better assist you.  Moving Companies always try to do their very best to meet the scheduling needs of our customers. You should discuss your specific pickup and delivery dates with your Mayflower or United Van Lines moving representative.

Should a Moving Company be licensed?

All interstate moving companies must hold a valid operating authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the federal agency that regulates movers. Choose a moving company that holds such a registration and is subject to all of the consumer protection and other regulations administered by the FMCSA.

Do I need an estimate?

We always recommend that you get an in home estimate from your moving company. It is the best practice to quote a move, establish where to park the truck, fine tune the amount of time it will take and properly estimate what it is going to cost. You should always receive a written estimate/Order for service that explains in detail what your moving company is charging you for. Keep in mind that the total charges for your move are based on the actual weight of your shipment, the origin and destination points of the move, distance of travel, services elected (Example: packing or unpacking) and additional charges for services requested outside of the original moving scope. When additional services are requested, it is advised to get a new estimate to include the cost of the extra services so that there aren’t unexpected surprises.

What is a binding estimate?

A binding estimate specifies in advance the precise cost of your move based on the services that you have requested or that your moving company has deemed necessary at the time of the estimate to complete your move. These estimates are valid for 60 days. If you are interested in obtaining a binding estimate, please call your moving company.

What is a non-binding estimate?

A non-binding estimate is prepared in advance to give you a general idea of the cost of your move. A non-binding estimate may not be the amount that you will ultimately have to pay. The exact cost of your move cannot be determined until after your shipment has be loaded and weighed. Transportation charges are based on a tariff, the actual weight of your goods, the origin and destination points of the move and the distance that it will travel. The total cost will include these basic line items. However, if you wish to elect coverage or have additional services, then you will need to have your moving company send you a revised estimate with the new pricing so that there aren’t any surprises later on.

How and when should I pay?

Moving regulations require that you pay the charges before your goods are unloaded at destination unless you have made prior billing arrangements with your moving company for later billing. If you would like this option, please get with your moving company representative to discuss the options and go through their individual credit checking process.

You can pay for your move by traveler’s check, money order, cashiers check or cash. You may also pay by credit card for interstate moves if you make arrangements with your moving company prior to loading. Personal checks are not typically accepted.

All payment forms apply to both binding and non-binding estimates. If you receive a non-binding estimate and your actual moving costs exceed the estimated cost, you will not be required to pay more than 110 percent of the estimated cost at the time of delivery. Should your actual cost exceed the amount paid at delivery, you will be given 30 days after the delivery to pay the additional amount.

If storage in transit at destination is necessary, payment of up to 110 percent of a non-bound estimate or 100 percent of a bound estimate must be paid at the time of delivery of the shipment to the warehouse.

You will be invoiced for any additional transportation or accessorial charges 30 days after your items are delivered to your home or to long term storage.

What shipment protection options are available?

The shipment protection option that you select prior to your move will determine your moving company’s maximum liability for loss and damage to your household goods. Please know that shipment protection is not insurance. If you want the type of protection afforded by insurance, please contact your insurance company representative.

Items of extraordinary value which are defined as items that have a value of $100.00 per pound, must be listed on the high value inventory form, which your moving company will give to you. Items of extraordinary value might include jewelry, art, coin collections and silverware. If you do not include these items on the high value inventory form, any settlement in the event of a claim will be limited to a maximum of $100.00 per pound per article under Full Value Protection.

Your moving company is required to offer you options of the minimum liability and the Full Value Protection option with deductibles. For a full description of your valuation options, please contact your moving company representative. It should be clearly discussed prior to loading your items onto a truck.

Can my possessions be stored temporarily?

Your belongings can be stored if you are unable to take immediate possession of your residence. Your moving company should be able to explain the storage in transit options that are available to you. However, you will be responsible for the storage charges that occur by your moving company storing your goods as well as the final delivery charges.

If your goods are placed in storage, there will also be an additional charge for the shipment protection option that you declared on your move. The type and cost will depend upon weather your goods are held in transit or in permanent storage.

Do my appliances needs special attention?

Most appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers and other mechanical appliances require special servicing to assure safe transportation. You will also have to have gas appliances serviced by your local gas utility.

It is your responsibility to ensure that all of your appliances are serviced prior to being loaded on the truck. Speak with your moving company representative to see if they can assist in arranging this service for you.

Can I pack my china, glass and crystal?

Most people prefer to have the moving professional package these types of items. However, if you decide to pack these items yourself, remember that the basic principles of good packing include wrapping items individually, providing plenty of cushioning within the cartons and making sure that you pack them tight and firm to avoid potential damage. You can purchase professional packing paper and tape from your moving company.

Can I pack my clothes in a chest or inside of dresser drawers?

You can leave lightweight clothing, sweaters, shirts, blouses and lingerie in drawers. Please do not fill the drawers with heavy items such as books, table linens or sheets, which can damage the piece of furniture during the move. Be careful not to leave fragile items, anything that may spill or leak, money, jewelry, watches, or any other valuables in the drawers.

Can I move my frozen foods?

If the food items are perishable, then they cannot be moved on the van. Plan your meals so that you use these types of items up prior to your move.

Can I move jewelry and other valuables?

Your moving company can move any items that you would like. However, we strongly suggest that you move these items yourself if possible. If you do require that your moving company move these items for you, then please be sure to list these items onto your high value inventory form.

Can I move my house plants?

Your moving company cannot accept responsibility to move your plants safely because they may suffer from lack of water, light as well as probable temperature changes while in the van. You may prefer to transport them in a car.

Some states prohibit the entry of all plants, while other states will admit plants under certain conditions; still others have no plant regulations. Be sure to check the regulations of the state that you are moving to or feel free to ask your moving company representative.

Can I move my pet?

Your moving company cannot move your pet on the moving van. Your moving company should be able to assist you with a professional pet moving company if you would like this option.

Do-It-Yourself Packing Guide

Want to save money on packing? Here are some hints and tips to ensure that your items arrive safely at the destination. We prepared this guide especially for our customers who want to save a few dollars, but also want to make sure that their items arrive in the same condition at destination as they were at origin.  Below, we will share some of the techniques that the professional packing crews use. We are letting the secret out!

You can pack as many items that you would like or you can have your moving company pack for you, every box packed is another dollar saved. Before you get started, here are some general suggestions to aid you and make your packing process a little bit easier.

·         Plan how you will pack your items. Always pack the items that you do not use that often first.

·         Do not make the boxes too heavy. Try to limit the weight to approximately 50 lbs per box to make handling a lot easier.

·         Do not pack flammable items such as aerosol sprays, fuels, nail polish or lighter fluid.

·         Use a generous amount of packing paper inside the box on the top and the bottom to provide a good cushion on the most strained parts of the box.

·         Separate breakable items from the non breakable items and pack as tight as possible to avoid movement within the cartons.

·         List the contents of the box clearly on the outside – This is an especially good thing to do with the fragile items so they do not get loaded on the bottom of other boxes.

·         Use clean paper and not printed on paper to wrap and protect items.

·         Indicate which boxes that you will need right away and write “Open First” on these so that you know  which boxes contain items that you are going to need right away.

·         Use professional packing tape as masking tape isn’t strong enough to support fully packed cartons.

·         Try to pack items that are in the same rooms together for an easier unpacking process at destination.

Start With the Basics

·         Start with out of season items and items that you do not use frequently. Leave the items that you will need last up until moving day.

·         Empty drawers of anything that can break or spill. You can keep blankets, sweaters and software in the drawers.

·         Pack similar items together. Keep hardware to all items in plastic bags clearly marked to which items they go to and then pack them all in the same box. Mark this box clearly as “PARTS BOX”

·         Wind electrical cords and fasten them so they do not tangle. Always pack the heavy items at the bottom of the cartons and then pack the lighter items on the top.

·         As each layer is completed, fill in empty spaces within the box firmly with crushed paper to make a level base for the next layer of items or you can use cardboard as dividers.

·         Seal your cartons tight with packing tape.

·         Indicate what room the boxes will be going into and label accordingly.

·         Pack shoes into original shoe boxes or wrap them individually to prevent damage and/or scuffing.

·         Do not pack your dishes flat. Pack them with the eating side facing the outer part of the carton. This allows space for the carton to absorb shock.

·         Do not lay pictures or mirrors flat into cartons. They are safer to be packed standing upright within a carton.

·         When you unpack electrical appliances and stereo’s, be sure to unplug them and allow them to cool down prior to packing.
